How You Can Help
One of the best ways to improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and  their families is through a generous donation.   Your dollars will go towards providing much needed programs and services.  These funds can be either unrestricted or donor designated.  If you would like to make a donation to an established donor designated fund or would like to discuss a planned gift please contact the Development Office at 218-6048

Best of all, HARC is classified as a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization by the IRS and your donations are tax deductible.

Ways to Donate

Donate on Line

HARC offers secure and fast on-line giving.  You can use either your credit card or your checking account.

Mail Check or Money Order

You may donate funds either by sending a check or money order made payable to HARC, 900 Asylum Ave., Hartford, CT 06105.  Or, if you would prefer to call and  make a donation,  please contact the Director of Development at 860-218-6048 or email at jmdejohn@harc-ct.org.  We accept Visa, MasterCard, and American Express.  Your contribution does make a difference!

Annual Fund/Membership Campaign

The Annual Fund/Membership Campaign is the way in which all of HARC's  family members and friends can help keep the organization vibrant.  This yearly appeal to our friends and family members raises funds that are immediately used to support the programs and services that HARC offers to individuals with intellectual disability and their family... such as family support programs, recreation, respite, and the behavioral health clinic to name a few.  Giving annually allows HARC to address needs as they arise and seize unexpected opportunities.  Again, this is about participation and expressing support for HARC, not about giving large gifts.

Consider turning your an annual gift into a monthly gift.  You will provide HARC with consistent funding throughout the year and by turning it into a manageable monthly payment you can even increase your overall total gift amount.

"New" IRA Distributions Program

The new Pension Protection Act of  2006 contains giving incentives designed to encourage charitable donations.  Individuals can now receive tax-free distributions from their IRA's  when the distribution is used for charitable purposes.  The provision provides an exclusion from gross income for certain distributions of  up to $100,000 per year from both traditional and Roth IRAs made during 2006 and 2007, by plan owners who have attained at least age 70½ on the date of distribution to the charity.    HARC encourages you to consider a making a gift to HARC using this new provision.  Your generous contributions help sustain our mission and the work of HARC. For details please speak with your financial advisor or you may contact our CFO at 860-218-6010.

Gift Planning

HARC's planned giving programs are an important part of our long-term stability.  It's an opportunity to provide significant support to HARC's work on behalf of individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families.  Most importantly, you will know that you will be supporting an organization you care about...for generations to come.

HARC Endowment

The HARC Endowment was established in 1989.  The endowment fund is  a vehicle for sustaining programs for adults and children, family support services and advocacy on behalf of individuals with intellectual disability and their families...well past our lifetimes.  And, a way to make certain that HARC and the important work we do continues for those who depend on us today and for those who will depend on us in the future generations.

Named Family Fund

HARC now offers families the opportunity to establish a named family fund with a contribution of $5,000 or more.  Named family funds can be unrestricted or donor designated.   If you are interested in establishing a named family fund, please contact HARC's Business Office at 218-6011 for the appropriate forms.

Stocks and Mutual Funds

Please consider a donation of stock or mutual funds to HARC. There are many advantages to donating stock or mutual funds, such as avoiding paying capital gains taxes when you donate appreciated securities, and receiving a charitable income tax deduction equal to the fair market value of the securities if they are held longer than one year. Stock transfers can be made by electronically by transferring the shares from your account directly to HARC's brokerage account.  Prior to transferring  the stock, please have your financial advisor contact the Development Director at  860-218-6048 .

Bequest

Another method of planned giving is a bequest.  This can be a simple provision in your will naming HARC as the beneficiary. It can state the following:

"I bequeath the sum of ___________dollars ($_______) to The Greater Hartford Association for Retarded Citizens, Inc. for its general charitable purposes."

or

"I devise and bequeath all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate to The Greater Hartford Association for Retarded Citizens, Inc. for its general charitable purposes."
