HARC helps people with
intellectual disability and their families enjoy lives of quality,
inclusion and dignity by providing support, education, and advocacy.
HARC was founded in 1951 by a small group of parents whose mission was
to address the challenges of intellectual disability. Years ago, when a
child was identified as having intellectual disability, he or she was
almost always referred to an institution. There were few, if any,
programs or services available to help the child living at home.

Recreation Programs
Children's Programs
The children's programs provide recreation to Hartford youth age 6 - 21
enrolled in special education. The programs may accommodate non-Hartford
residents based on space availability. A fee based on the child's needs is
charged for non-Hartford residents. All program activities are community-based.
Saturday Program
The Saturday Program has three consecutive sessions that run from October to
May. All activities are community based. Activities include the Saturday Special
Needs Social Club in Manchester, Community Outreach day at UConn, a nature
series at Barnes Nature Center and Indian Rock Nature Preserve, and local fairs
and community activities.
"School's Out"
This is an all-day program running during the winter and springs breaks of
the Hartford school system. The activities are similar to the Saturday Program.
Summer Camp
Camp Courant:
Twenty children
participate in two-=week sessions in this day camp run by the
Hartford Courant from June to August. Camping activities include sports,
crafts, swimming, and games.
Batterson Park:
Campers based at Batterson Park in Farmington
enjoy swimming and day trips.
Adult Programs
The Adult Program provides recreation opportunities and Special Olympics for
adults 18 or older in the Greater Hartford area. A current HARC membership is
required to participate in these programs. Quarterly club calendars and monthly
special event and "On Your Own" calendars are sent to registered participants.
Get Up & Go Clubs
The core of the Adult Programs, each of the Clubs has a membership that lasts
for three months with new Clubs being formed on a quarterly basis. One inclusive
fee is charged per club. Some of the Clubs are the Dining Out Club, Tuesday
Bowling Club, Night at the Movies Club and the Arts Club.
Special Events
This supplemental program runs throughout the year and activities may take
place outside the Hartford area. Some of last year's activities were a trip the
Basketball Hall of Fame in Massachusetts, the Mystic Aquarium, and the Bronx Zoo
in New York.
"On Your Own"
This component is attached to the monthly Special Events calendar. It
contains a listing of activities in the Greater Hartford area that may be of
interest for independent participation. Many of the activities have little or no
cost and their nearby locations have helped to make this component a big
success.
