HARC helps people with intellectual disability and their families enjoy lives of quality, inclusion and dignity by providing support, education, and advocacy.

HARC was founded in 1951 by a small group of parents whose mission was to address the challenges of intellectual disability. Years ago, when a child was identified as having intellectual disability, he or she was almost always referred to an institution. There were few, if any, programs or services available to help the child living at home.

HARC Cub Scouts Work on Their Bear Badges

Scouts displaying woodworking projects

In March the HARC Cub Scouts continued to work on "Achievements" to bring them closer to obtaining their Bear Badges.  They worked on an achievement that required them to fix things with tools.  They fixed a door hinge, assembled a sliding bolt latch, and changed batteries in a smoke detector.  They also made a wooden instrument called a "clacker."  They continued to learn about food by making a tried and true scout lunch - pigs-in-a-blanket and s'mores.

Cycle Trip to Benefit HARC

Paul Mikkelson

On Saturday, June 28, Paul Mikkelson, President of Dill, Joyce & Thresher Insurance, will begin a 100-mile bicycle trip around Connecticut to benefit HARC and other local non-profit agencies. Paul will be joined by members of bike clubs and other biking enthusiasts.  Support will be provided at several rest stops by local Rotary Clubs.  Biking 100 miles in a day is grueling and requires time-consuming training.  To support Paul and the other bikers by making a pledge, please click here and specify in the comment box that your donation is for the Bike-athon.  For more information on Paul's bike ride check out this web page.  Thank you, Paul!

Campers Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Tracey and Gabe hit the piņata

On May 3 Camp Bulova celebrated both Cinco de Mayo and mothers.   In nutrition campers made Cinco de Mayo popcorn with chili powder.  In arts and crafts they made tissue paper Mother's Day flowers to take home and decorated the new scooters with hot peppers.   They welcomed two new friends - Maggie Carchrie, a music therapist, and Peg Taddio, a nurse.

The theme of camp on May 17 will be storybook characters.
